Frequently Asked Questions
What does "We're Expecting" really mean?
"We're Expecting" means that our female has been bred with our male at the appropriate time during her ovulation and we expect that it will result in her conceiving.
When will you know for sure the female is pregnant?
We can detect fetal heart sounds around 35-40 days after breeding but I tend to rely more on how the female acts and the way her body is growing. If there is a questionable pregnancy we will have our female checked by a vet. Once we feel confident that our female is pregnant we will email everyone on the reservation list with a "confirmed pregnancy" email and update our website posting to reflect it.
What is a "False Pregnancy" and what will it mean for me? A "false pregnancy" means our female did not conceive as we expected. She may progress as if she is pregnant and may even develop milk and have an enlarged abdomen. This is common in dogs and is a hormonal response to the breeding cycle. For these reasons it can be somewhat tricky to determine true conception early in the pregnancy. If any deposit was made you will have the option to receive your money back or leave your deposit for a guaranteed puppy in the next available litter. If your name was your deposit you have the option to leave your name in place on the list and reserve your spot in line for the next available litter of puppies.
How will I know when my Puppy is born and what do I do?
As soon as your puppy is born I will send you a series of emails that will include everything you need to make your puppy deposit and for future payment instructions if you haven't already.
At what age do you send the puppies to their new homes?
We ship the puppies once they are 8 weeks old. This is airline regulations and we have no control over it. However, it also ensures the puppies are well socialized and are better able to withstand the stress of being shipped. We ship via major Airlines so all you would need to do is let me know the closest airport to you that major airlines fly into and we will ship the puppy when it is convenient for you to be there to receive them. We provide an airline approved shipping kennel, collar, leash, all paperwork for the puppy and parents lineage including a health certificate from a veterinarian within 10 days of sending your puppy to you. The cost of airline shipping is a minimal $375 with additional fees at the owners expense for any required airline overnight stays.
How long have you been breeders?
We have been involved with dogs for over 10 years and specifically with poodles and schnauzers for about 7 of the last 10 years. We like many breeders fell in love with the breed initially as a family pet and decided that we wanted to breed puppies for others to enjoy like we have. We have only recently started our breeding program under the supervision and support of another Giant Schnauzer breeder with over 50 years experience. It is our belief that breeding should be done for the love of the dogs and that they should be treated with all the love and attention that they deserve.
Are Your Puppies Registered or Registerable?
Yes, we register our Giant Schnoodle Puppies with the American Canine Hybrid Club/America's Pet Registry and our Giant Schnauzers with the AKC. Our Giant Schnoodle puppies will come with papers just like a pure-bred puppy would. American Canine Hybrid Club is a dog registration service that recognizes and registerslegitimate hybrids bred from purebred ancestry just like the AKC or CKC registries. All "purebred" dogs began at one time as a mixture of often unknown origins. The individual breed characteristics were "fixed" over time until the dogs produced offspring true to type. Specific hybrids may be developed into purebreds in their own right as breeders selectively breed for desired qualities.
Why Do You Register the Puppies if They Are Not "Purebred"?
We register the puppies with the American Canine Hybrid Club/Americas Pet Registry & the AKC for YOUR protection as a buyer. We are not doing this to gouge our puppy owners for extra money - In fact it is quite the opposite. We DO NOT CHARGE anything extra for this basic registration. We register our puppies so that as a buyer you are sure you are receiving a full blood Schnauzer or an "F1" Schnoodle puppy. "F1 Puppy" means you are getting a "First Generation" hybrid cross from two purebred parents registered with the organization. It is documented that a first generation puppy results in the most consistent specific breed characteristics that people are wanting in a Giant Schnoodle than a second generation cross (2 giant schnoodles having puppies for example).
What if I am on the list but there aren't enough puppies for me to have one?
If your name is on the reservation list and there are not enough puppies for you to get one from this litter I will reserve your name on the list for the next litter along with anyone else who may not have gotten the puppy they wanted. The names on the list will remain in place for the next litter. I have your contact information and I will keep you informed as soon as we observe another successful breeding with our dogs. We typically we have about 2 litters of puppies per year total. This means you should have your puppy in approximately 6 months if this litter doesn't provide one for you. There is no need to decide if you want to wait for the next litter right now. You can decide when I email you with the next litter announcement!
Do you start any training process with them? We introduce them to soft dog food around 3-4 weeks of age and have them weaned by 6 weeks. We socialize the puppies starting from the day they are born to all ages of people. I have a 5yr and 6yr old and the puppies will be comfortable with people of all ages by the time they are 8 weeks old. We do not start Crate or potty training at such a young age but puppies will be doggy door trained and be accustomed to voiding on grass.
Would I be able to pick up the dog instead of having it shipped?
Yes, we love it when a new owner can come and pick up their puppy. This gives us the chance to meet you and you to meet us! We keep a puppy until his 12th week for any new puppy owner for free. After their 12th week we will charge a $50/month fee to keep the puppy for you.
I'm really looking forward to their arrival!
We are too! I will send you pictures when we can as the mother grows and when the puppies are here .
How many litters a year do you typically have?
typically 1 or 2 litters per female per year. This is for our females health and so that the puppies can be raised with all the love and socialization that they need.
When do you wean the puppies?
The puppies are weaned completely by 6 weeks but we introduce soft food at 3-4 weeks
Do all the dogs (parents and puppies) live in your home with you all the time?
Both my male and female live with us at our home all of the time. Since the giant schnauzer and standard poodle are a large breed they enjoy the outdoors and spend a lot of the day outside on our farm. Our dogs are not "inside dogs" but are allowed indoors to socialize. Puppies are Whelped inside our home and kept indoors at least until their 3rd or 4th week of age.
Do you have certifications, etc., for the parents available that we can look at?
Yes, you can see copies of these certificates on our "Adults" page.
Do you have certifications for the grandparents, etc. available that we can look at?
Yes, all of my dogs are registered (my giant schnauzer male & female with the AKC and my standard poodle female with the CKC) and you can see their lineage on their pedigrees on our "Adults" page.
What type of food do you feed your dogs, where can I get it, and how much can I expect an adult Giant to eat?
I feed pedigree to my dogs with occasional real meat or veggies. They eat about 25 pounds of dog food each every 2 weeks.
How often do the puppies get to play with children?
From the time the puppies are whelped I have a 4 year old and 5 year old that are around and play with the puppies all of the time so they will be well socialized to all ages of people.
What type of puppy testing, etc. do you do to help families pick the right puppy?
This is a little more tricky since puppies are usually selected by their new owner as soon as they are born. However, any puppy can be taught either good or bad behavior by their owners which can always play a role in your puppy's temperament. If the puppy is to go to a small apartment for example I try to stress that these dogs like exercise and LOVE to be around their owners so they may throw "temper fits" and tear up the toilet paper if left in an apartment without their owners for extended periods of time etc. I also will be sending puppy information, training and socialization sheets that help owners train and anticipate what to expect with this specific type of dog. It is my best intention to have both the owner and puppy as well trained as can be expected so that there is less stress on either later in the relationship.
Do you do the dew claws & tails before sending them to their new homes?
Yes, we do the dew claws and tails between 2-4 days after they are born. I can omit any of these at your request as long as I receive your request BEFORE the puppies are born because the tails and dew claws are done at about 3 days old. We don't crop the ears and do not spay/neuter our puppies before they leave for their new homes.
Do you spay or neuter the puppies before sending them to their new homes?
No, we do not spay or neuter the puppies. Studies show that the best time to have a dog spayed or neutered is around 5 months of age and we anticipate the puppies will be in their new forever homes by this time. Also, I don't like to spay/neuter an animal I will have to relocate soon because the stress of moving/shipping could cause the animal delayed healing - not to mention the increased chance for infection during transport. I believe it is best for the puppies owner to have them comfortable in their new home before neutering/spaying so that post-surgery they are more comfortable in their environment and will heal better.
